In 1845, Henry Knighton came across the Oregon Trail from Missouri with his wife and 2 young children to Oregon City. Henry owned the hotel where the first Oregon Territorial Legislature met and was US Marshal of the Oregon Territory.
But Oh Henry was not satisfied. He filed a 640-acre land claim and tamed the wilderness that would become Saint Helens.
Oh Henry had a dream to build a great port city, and he worked at it for years and years, but it didn’t work out.
OH ! HEN-RY OH ! HEN-RY OH ! HEN-RY OH ! HEN-REEEEEEEEEE
Verse 1
He rode west on the Oregon Trail, 30,000 died along that Trail.
Wagons, dust, sickness struck . . . Henry saved his family, night-by-night.
Where the river bends, eagles fly, timber grows so high.
As the mountains rise, ride on, reach the sky, touch the sky.
OH ! HEN-RY OH ! HEN-RY OH ! HEN-RY OH ! HEN-REEEEEEEEEE
In Oregon City whiskey runs and guns rebel, Henry owned the City Hotel.
If there was trouble, US Marshal Henry was there . . . his gun was Justice, no one dared.
Where the river bends, eagles fly, timber grows so high.
As the mountains rise, ride on, reach the sky, touch the sky.
OH ! HEN-RY OH ! HEN-RY OH ! HEN-RY OH ! HEN-REEEEEEEEEE
He rode west through whispering pines, to Saint Helens, where the river winds.
Through fire and fever, dust and lead . . . he carved a path where few had dared to tread.
Where the river bends, eagles fly, timber grows so high.
As the mountains rise, ride on, reach the sky, touch the sky.
OH ! HEN-RY OH ! HEN-RY OH ! HEN-RY OH ! HEN-REEEEEEEEEE
He got the steamships to dock here, but the railroad those guys would not come near,
Though he had tried and tried . . . he had to leave unsatisfied.
Where the river bends, eagles fly, timber grows so high.
As the mountains rise, ride on, reach the sky, touch the sky.
In 1864, during our Civil War, Henry got the typhoid fever and died.
His wife sold his claim, but Henry Knighton made his name,
As the man who founded this town . . . he was the man who founded this town.
