Did you ever wonder what first put Astoria on the map?
At Fort Astoria, the fur trade took hold along the Columbia River, drawing mountain men into a world of pelts, profit, and a restless kind of freedom. The traps snapped, the rivers ran, and some men never came home. Meanwhile, far-off fortunes grew in Astor’s hands and others like him.
Some chased pelts. Some were chasing something else. Some say they never really left at all.
Out here, gold and blood can buy your name.
Verse 1
Fur and Freedom ruled the land,
Gold for pelts made a mountain of a man.
Hats in Europe wanted beaver hide,
Native lands were pushed aside.
Click Snap Oh Snap You Are Trapped
Haunted hearts with nameless ghosts,
Chasing the shadows that haunt them most.
A lonely death always at their side,
Running from themselves, the chaos inside, chaos inside.
Chorus
Fur and freedom, that’s the cry,
Fur and freedom, live or die,
A man’s worth weighed by what he claims,
Gold and blood can buy your name.
Verse 2
Axes bite deep, rivers run fast,
Traps snap shut, some fingers don’t last.
Pelts piled fortunes for Astor to claim,
He never saw the town with his name.
Clink Clank Pelts Banked Rich Men Grin
A warm fire burns in Astor’s fort,
Passion on the pelts, come back for more,
Some pay a price, some roll in sin,
The fire of rage, madness sets in, madness sets in.
Chorus
Fur and freedom, that’s the cry,
Fur and freedom, live or die,
A man’s worth weighed by what he claims,
Gold and blood can buy your name.
Verse 3
In 1812 America went to war,
Fort Astoria became Fort George,
Mountain men were strangers on stolen shores,
Guided by tribes who were there long before.
Tick Tock Life Clock We Are Gone
Mountain men are now dust and bone,
Forts stand empty, rivers moan.
Beaver hides gone, the forests bare,
Faded legends haunt the air, haunt the air.
Chorus
Fur and freedom, that’s the cry,
Fur and freedom, live or die,
Their tales of courage burn in flame,
Gold and blood can buy your name.
